4EN Coffee Grounds Biochar
This project transforms waste coffee grounds into biochar through pyrolysis, preventing methane emissions and enhancing soil health. Certified under the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard for 1,000-year carbon persistence, it targets 13,060 tCO2eq sequestered over five years.

Coffee grounds are generated in large quantities, but effective recycling solutions are lacking. This project aims to convert coffee grounds into valuable resources, creating environmental benefits. Through a pyrolysis process, coffee grounds are transformed into biochar, preventing methane emissions and enabling long-term carbon sequestration. The project will increase carbon sequestration by working the produced biochar into different matrices to create a long-term carbon storage with a persistence of up to 1000 years as according to the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard. Without the project, no C-sink would be created since coffee grounds does not constitute a long-term carbon reservoir. The project has no end date and will continue operating indefinitely, with verification conducted annually. Below is the projected impact for the first five years, based on current capacity and operational plans. These figures will be updated periodically as the project scales and undergoes further optimization. In the initial 5 years of the project, we expect carbon sequestration of approximately 13,060 CO2eq in total or 2612 CO2eq / year.
