Circonomy and ECO2

Circonomy and ECO2 empower Kenyan smallholder farmers to convert agricultural and bamboo waste into biochar using flame-curtain kilns. Applied with compost to enhance soil, this Artisan Pro-certified project targets 35,800 tCO2eq sequestered over five years.

Circonomy and ECO2

Circonomy, in collaboration with ECO2, is empowering smallholder farmers in the Kakamega region and beyond by supporting the production of biochar from agricultural residues and bamboo waste, by providing them trainings, flame-curtain kilns and soil pits, and monitoring technology. This biochar is then blended with compost and applied back to the soil, enhancing soil fertility, improving crop yields, and contributing to long-term carbon removal. The project will increase carbon sequestration by working the produced biochar into different matrixes and in this way create a long-term carbon storage with a persistence of up to 1000 years as according to the Global Artisan C-Sink Standard. Without the project, no C-sink would be created since agricultural residues and bamboo waste do not constitute a long-term carbon reservoir. In the initial 5 years of the project, we expect carbon sequestration of approximately 35,800 tCO2eq in total or 7,160 tCO2eq / year.
