Nirvana Carbon Solutions
This project empowers smallholder farmers in West Bengal, India to convert rice straw into biochar using soil-pit kilns. Certified under the Global Artisan C-Sink Standard for 1,000-year persistence, it targets 190,681 tCO2eq sequestered over five years while boosting livelihoods.

This project works with smallholder farmers in rural West Bengal, India with plot sizes averaging 0.2 Ha who live off of $2-5 per day. Using soil-pit kilns, biochar will be produced as a soil amendment to these farmers’ fields, while contributing to the improvement of their livelihood. The project will increase carbon sequestration by working the produced biochar into different matrixes and in this way create a long-term carbon storage with a persistence of up to 1000 years as according to the Global Artisan C-Sink Standard. Without the project, no C-sink would be created since open burning of rice straw does not constitute a long-term carbon reservoir. In the initial 5 years of the project we expect carbon sequestration of approximately 190,681 CO2eq in total 38,136 CO2eq / year.
