Perivoli Rangeland Institute

The Perivoli Rangeland Institute (PRI) is a farmer-centric, science-led, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the ecological restauration and biodiversity enhancement of degraded land across southern Africa. The Perivoli Farmer's Association, part of the Perivoli Rangeland Restoration Programme, will empower over 300 farmers to combat bush encroachment and land degradation using biochar, enhancing soil health and biodiversity. Farmers and their biochar production teams will be trained and certified as Artisan Pros under Carbon Standards International Guidelines by Perivoli Trainers. The project will increase carbon sequestration by working the produced biochar into different soil matrixes on the farm and in this way create a long-term carbon storage with a persistence of up to 1,000 years. Without the project, no Csink would be created since Senegalia mellifera, Dichrostachys cinerea, Vachellia reficiens, Catophractes alexandri, Colophospermum mopane, Combretum apiculatum, Vachellia karroo, Terminalia prunioides, Grewia flava, Vachellia leuderitzii, Vachellia erubescens, Senegalia senegal and Terminalia sericea do not constitute a long-term carbon reservoir. In the initial 5 years of the project, we expect carbon sequestration of approximately 56,763t CO2eq in total through biochar production alone. Soil organic carbon is subsequently going to increase long term from holistic rangeland management systems.
